Ron
has been interested in art since his early days when his mother
would break out the crayons. She was always very supportive of
any thing he did that was creative in nature. Ron loved working
with his hands and was awe struck at the many talents expressed
by the crafters of the world. That interest carried on into
school years. His formal education was at College of Marin,
where he studied under Gilbert Wheat in the late sixties. His
passion lies in painting.
He
had a short 35 year disconnect from the art world, where he went
into business with his brother, Bill as proprietors of
Fieldbrook General Store.
As his business career started to slow down, he found time to
start painting again.
His favorite medium as it turns out is watercolor. He has been
painting in watercolor for the past fifteen plus years. He loves
reading about other painters and how their lives have been
consumed by the creative process. He enjoys the masters as well
as the painters of today. Ron is a studio painter and relies on
his camera, sketches and notes. Mostly he uses 140lb watercolor
paper, soaked and stretched. He uses an assortment of art
brushes and even cheap household brushes.
"Spare no idea to achieve the end result", he says. He uses
Winsor Newton and Ultrech paints. He loves all colors. Ron
believes anyone can paint and paint well if they have the
desire. He knows enough about watercolor to know that it is
always about learning and doing more and arriving at new
plateaus along the way. That is why it will always be an
exhilarating and confoundedly unpredictable adventure.
Ron’s work is representational in style. He enjoys painting
everyday life of Humboldt County. He says, “those who live on
the north coast know they live in a special place; blessed with
an abundance of natural resources. It is a treasure chest for
the artist. The clouds, the people, the farms, the coastline,
the lakes, the rivers, the redwoods and the fishing fleet, its
all here.
Ron says that he doesn’t have a good definition of why he
paints, other than it is in him to do so. He feels joy and
connection when he is painting.
